My Journey of Sashiko

2025/01

I never expected to discover sashiko in Canada.

As a Japanese person, I thought I would someday learn it in Japan. Instead, I found it in Toronto, thousands of kilometers away from home.

That unexpected encounter changed everything.

Since then, I have practiced every day, believing that every stitch carries meaning.

After my working holiday visa expired, I returned to Japan.

There, I was given an incredible opportunity to connect with professionals in the Japanese sashiko industry.

One of the people who greatly influenced me was Mr. Jun Sugimae, who has dedicated more than ten years to preserving and evolving sashiko. His work combines traditional craftsmanship with modern ideas, exploring new possibilities through collaborations between technology and sashiko.

Working alongside passionate artisans taught me not only techniques but also the values, creativity, and dedication behind every stitch. It was an experience that deeply shaped my approach to craftsmanship.

2025/12-

In December 2025, I moved to Wellington, New Zealand.

Far from home once again, I decided to build something of my own.

Wellington became the place where Sashiko.lee.K truly began—a brand dedicated to transforming vintage garments into one-of-one pieces through hand-stitched sashiko.
